Jaap Kymmell was a Dutch civil servant, economist and and banker.[1] He attended the 1967 Bilderberg conference.

Background

The Kymmells came from an influential family of businesspeople in Drenthe in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Jaap Kymmell himself was born in Bandung, Dutch East Indies in 1921. His mother came to the Netherlands with him in 1933. He enrolled in the University of Amsterdam's law faculty in 1939, but interrupted it during the war years. Nevertheless, he graduated in 1946.

Career

He subsequently became a policy advisor and 'diplomat' of the Ministry of Economic Affairs. In this period of foreign exchange scarcity, tied payments and bilateral trade and payment agreements, the foundations were laid for European cooperation. He regularly traveled with ministerial delegations. In 1950 he laid down his experiences and insights in a dissertation entitled 'The development of the international payment system'. He obtained his doctorate cum laude in economic sciences.

After two years at the steel producer Hoogovens, Kymmell returned to The Hague, now to Foreign Affairs: economic and military aid programs, later to the European Integration Department. In 1955 he became professor by special appointment at the Dutch Economic University of Rotterdam, teaching International Economic Relations. He remained a professor until 1973.

In 1964 he became a partner of the private bank Pierson Heldring and Pierson, which made him wealthy. He remained there until 1975, when PHP was acquired by Amro. Kymmell was not enthusiastic about that and not all 17 partners could join.

In 1975 he was asked to become a board member of the bank Nibe and to be acting director for the ailing director C.D. Jongman, and from 1976 director. The company in reality remained in the hands of the then deputy director Jack Van Driel. When Van Driel finally received the title of director in 1980, Kymmell continued to do the same work in his area of expertise Association Activities, now under the name of Managing Director.

Compared to his predecessor Jongman at Nibe, Kymmell was very socially oriented:

  • participant in the 1967 Bilderberg Conference;
  • initiator Erasmus Institute for Political Education at the University of Cologne.
  • member of the Liberal Reveil editorial board of the VVD;
  • advisor Chamber of Commerce Rotterdam
