Propaganda straight from US government
In March 2019, the Russian phone pranksters 'Vova' and 'Lexus' managed to deceive the US envoy for Venezuela, Elliott Abrams. They called him and pretended to be the "president of Switzerland" and asked what they should do with the Venezuelan money that was in accounts of a fictitious Swiss bank called "Limpopo", by an equally fictitious "Baidilda"-fund. Abrams fell for it, and wanted to freeze the Venezuelan money in the accounts, or better, transfer it directly to the unsuccessful coup plotter Juan Guaidó.[4]
The "Swiss president" agreed, but he noted that the money was "clean" and there was no legal way to freeze the accounts. Abrams then asked what the "Swiss president" needed. The answer was: "Information that these funds were received by criminal or other illegal means".[4]
They agreed to clarify the details by e-mail and then Abrams offered that Bloomberg would publish an article that would reveal "money laundering" by President Nicolas Maduro, so that Switzerland would then have a legal pretext. Abrams sent the text of the article to the "Swiss President" so that he could make corrections. The article was published by Bloomberg on February 25, 2019. Bloomberg did not even google the name of the bank or the fund, which would have exposed the story as false.[4]

| Anatoly Kurmanaev | “"Every journalist has an audience he caters for and in my case, it’s the financial community. You are a mercenary in a sense. You’re there to provide information to a particular client that they find important and it's not good or bad, it’s just the way it is...A couple of times from my experience you try to use, I wouldn’t call them 'cheap tricks', but yeah, kind of sexy tricks. Just last week we had a story about condom shortages in Venezuela. At the official exchange rate condoms were at like $750 dollars or something and the headline was something like ‘$750 dollar condom in Venezuela’ and everyone clicks it, everyone is like 'Jesus, why do they sell it for like $750?'" (We don't learn until the ninth paragraph of Kurmanaev's article that a pack of condoms actually cost about the same as it did in the US at the time.)” | Anatoly Kurmanaev | 2019 |
