Matthew Elliott (born 12 February 1978) is a British political strategist and lobbyist who has been the chief executive of a number of organisations and been involved in various successful referendum campaigns, including Vote Leave.

Matthew Elliot was the founder and has been chief executive of the TaxPayers' Alliance in 2004, Big Brother Watch and Business for Britain. In 2012, he was also a founding member of Conservative Friends of Russia.[1]

Matthew Elliott has also seen success as a political strategist, acting as campaign director for the successful NOtoAV campaign in the 2011 Alternative Vote referendum. In 2015, Elliot and Dominic Cummings co-founded Vote Leave, which became the official organisation advocating for a 'leave' vote in the 2016 EU Referendum.

In a September 2018 interview with the New Statesman, Matthew Elliott said:

“I’m disappointed that the Leave side left the battlefield after the referendum, we’re moving towards a softer Brexit than we might otherwise have had.”

Asked whether Michael Gove should become prime minister, Elliott replied:

“I’m very wary of entering this line of questioning, I’m not sure an endorsement from me is particularly good for anybody!”

But after stating his “admiration” for Boris Johnson, Elliott named new Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab, Home Secretary Sajid Javid and chief secretary to the Treasury Liz Truss as potential leadership contenders.[2]
