Ruprecht Rolf Gotthelf Polenz is a German politician.
Background
Polenz spent the first six years of his childhood in Saxony. Since his parents did not want him to be educated in East Germany, the family fled to West Germany in 1952.
Education
After graduating from high school in 1966, Polenz was initially a volunteer soldier and reserve officer. As a motive, he stated his conviction that war can only be avoided by deterrence.[1] Then, from 1968, he studied law as a scholarship holder of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation at the University of Münster, which he completed in 1973. After completing his legal traineeship, he also passed the second state examination in 1976 and worked as a research assistant at the Institute of Tax Law at the University of Münster from 1977 to 1980.
Career
In 1980, he moved to the Münster Chamber of Industry and Commerce as head of the Press and Public Relations department, of which he then became Managing Director in 1984. From 1994 to October 2013, he was on leave in this capacity for the duration of his membership in the German Bundestag.
From 1975 to 1994, Polenz was a member of the Münster City Council. He was a member of the German Bundestag from 1994 to 2013 and was Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee from 2005 to 2013.
Polenz was one of the first CDU members of the Bundestag to advocate the introduction of Islamic religious education in the German language. In foreign policy, one of his main focuses was on Islamic countries such as Turkey and Iran.
Ruprecht Polenz was President of the German Atlantic Society from 1996 to 2006. Since 2014, Polenz has been the Dean of the Global Diplomacy Lab (GDL). Polenz is also a member of the think tank Centre for Liberal Modernism.
