The Social Democratic Party of Germany (German: Sozialdemokratische Partei Deutschlands, SPD) is a social-democratic political party in Germany. It is one of the two major contemporary political parties in Germany along with the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU).
Bill Gates
Bill Gates was a guest at a SPD party conference before the 2013 German elections. Gates took some time for a private chat with the Social Democrats for an hour, including a preliminary discussion with SPD leader Sigmar Gabriel and chancellor candidate Peer Steinbrück, which "filled the party with a certain pride". Some board members, as soon as Gates had arrived at the highly secured hotel, took out their mobile phones to take a souvenir snap shot. Gates had kind words to say about the candidate for chancellor. "I know Peer from the time when he was finance minister, that was an enormously productive time in international development, when there were new financing strategies, new global commitment and cooperation. I would like to thank Peer for his leading role."[3]
