Giovanni Ravasio is an Italian economist who was Director-General for Economic and Financial Affairs of the European Commission.[1] He attended the 1982 Bilderberg meeting.

Education

Giovanni Ravasio studied economic sciences at the Free University of Brussels from 1957 until 1962.[2]

Career

From 1963 to 1965 he was employed by the European Economic Community as Secretary of the Study group on economic cycles. In 1965, he joined the Directorate-General for Economic and Financial Affairs of the Commission of the European Economic Community. He worked in the Belgium-Benelux Office and dealt with macro-economic surveillance, analysis.[2]

In 1971, he was in charge of issues relating to Community structural policies (energy, regions, state subsidies). From 1978 to 1981, he was head of the Economic Integration Unit (DG II-B-1). In 1981-1982, he exercised the functions of adviser to the President of the Commission and from 1982 to 1986 he headed the directorate 'Economic Structure and interventions of the Community'. In 1986-1987 he moved to the Directorate-General for Budget (dgI From 1987 to 1989, he was Director-General of Financial Control (DG XX In 1989-1990, he was Director-General for the Coordination of Structural Instruments (DGII In 1990, he was appointed Director-General for Economic and Financial Affairs. In the same year, he became a member of the directorate of the European Investment Bank and in 1994 a member of the directorate of the European Investment Fund. He left the Commission in 2001.[2]

He was "well connected with the French establishment".[3]
