Background
He was born to Gunnar and Kajsa Hellstrom (née Johansson). After graduating from Stockholm University in 1965, he taught economics at the university from 1965 to 1969. He joined the Swedish Social Democratic Party and was a member of the board of the youth organization from 1968 to 1972.
Career
In 1969 he also became a member of the Executive Committee of the Swedish Social Democratic Party. In the same year he was elected as a member of the Swedish Riksdag. He ultimately held both positions until 1996. In Parliament he was a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee. From 1982 to 1983 he was chairman of the finance committee.
