James Keith Kallstrom [1] a.k.a. Jim Kallstrom, was an American Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agent who was assistant director in charge of its field office in New York. He was noted for heading the "investigation" and cover-up of the TWA Flight 800 crash in 1996.

Career

Kallstrom received a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1966. He was with the Marine Corps in Vietnam.[2]

Kallstrom worked for 27 years at the FBI from February 1970 to December 31, 1997 [3] and was described as an expert in wiretapping.[4] During his career, he was a leading advocate of expanding wiretapping power through the Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act (CALEA).[4] He headed the special operations division at the Bureau's field office in New York.

Kallstrom helped investigate the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center.

He later became assistant director in charge of the office in 1995, a position he held until his retirement two years later.[2] He was a supervising agent in the New York investigation of the Cosa Nostra criminal network that resulted in the Mafia Commission Trial of 1985–1986.[5]

His FBI TWA Flight 800 "investigation" was a cover-up of an incident when a US Navy missile shot down a commercial airline outside Long Island, killing 230 people. His official report said the cause for the crash was a random spark igniting one of the gas tanks.

Kallstrom left the public sector for private sector employment in the financial industry beginning in 1998.[3] After the September 11 attacks, he returned to the public sector to lead New York state's public safety office at the behest of George Pataki.[6]

Later Life

He supported Donald Trump, calling Hillary Clinton part of a crime family.[7] He criticized the Mueller Report.

He believed there's a Fifth Column running the FBI. "It’s crystal clear that there’s a cabal, a far-reaching cabal, way beyond the bureau, into the intelligence community . . . into the National Security Council . . . into all these peripheral people, putting this thing together, this fraud against Trump."[8][2]

He died in July 2021.[9]
