An irrational, sometimes overwhelming fear

A phobia is an irrational fear. Many people have a range of phobias, whether about spiders, heights, the dark etc. These are only subject to limted conscious control, but usually do not have much impact on people's lives. The phobias of particular interest to this project are those which are cultivated for purposes of social control. Notable amongst these in the modern era is Islamophobia.

Nature

Although they often have a rational basis (such as fear of falling), phobias are an unreasoning fear.
