Ulrik Federspiel is a Danish diplomat who was a member of the Bilderberg Steering committee.
Background
His father was deep state actor Per Federspiel, who during the German occupation in WW2 was responsible for arranging the British intelligence SOE financing of much of the resistance movement.[1] Per Federspiel worked strongly Denmark's membership in the EEC and was 1960-1963 president of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe as the only Dane ever. He was also vice-president for the Cold War outfit International Commission of Jurists ("set up and controlled by the CIA for propaganda operations").
Education
Federspiel became in 1962 a student of Rungsted Statsskole, then studied at Aarhus University and took an MA the University of Pennsylvania in 1971.[2]
Career
In 1971, he was hired in the Ministry of foreign affairs, from 1984-1989 at the embassy in Washington. In the period 1991-1993 he was a director in the ministry. He then worked for three years as head of Department at the Prime Minister's office.
He was appointed ambassador in 1997 and was for three years Denmark's ambassador to Ireland followed by five years as ambassador to the United States, in the years after 9/11. In 2005, Federspiel was replaced as ambassador by Friis Arne Petersen returning to the Foreign Ministry. Federspiel was director for four years after returning to Denmark, and had to deal with the crisis around the "The Muhammad cartoons", a number of protests against Denmark, including violence and riots in some Muslim countries, after the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten published twelve editorial cartoons in 2005 depicting Muhammad, the prophet of Islam.[2]
After 37 years in government employment, he in April 2009 became Vice President of Global Affairs at Topsoe[3], a company with several Bilderbergers in the direction.
In March 2009 Federspiel was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of the Dannebrog.
From 1993 to 1997 he was a member of the consistory of the University of Copenhagen. He has been and continues to be a member of various boards, among them the board of the Danish Foreign Policy Society, of where he became chairman in November 2019.[4]
He wrote one of the first Danish books on the EEC and has written several articles on European and energy policy topics.[2] In his 2020 memoirs, he ends by stating that there is no current alternative to the Danish course laid out in his time, including in particular the alliance with the United States in NATO.[2]
Marriage
He married Chief Physician Birgitte Hartnack Federspiel, who is the daughter of professor, Dr. phil. Justus Hartnack.
