Beijing or 北京 is the capital of China since the People's Republic of China won the Chinese Civil War in 1949 with over 21 million citizens.

Origin

Founded in 1045 BC or BCE, Beijing had gone through dozens of name changes, but was under Chinese rulers since 221 BC.

Pollution

Beijing's Citizens Offer Clarity on Air Quality Levels - Bloomberg

During the enormous growth of the economy of China in the 2000s and the 2010s, the city suffered enormous pollution, on top of natural occurring sandstorms.China’s capital was often covered in dense yellow and gray smog, so thick it shrouded nearly everything from view causing people to lock their windows, donned face masks and cranked air purifiers on high to escape what became known as Beijing’s “air-pocalypse.” [1] Development in better regulations in the 2020s, caused the average citizen to live 2 years longer.[2]

Deep Lobbying

Russia

After the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine in late February 2022, The New York Times published a report alleging that China requested Russia to delay the invasion until after the Olympics to avoid damaging the Games' public image.[3]

Boycott calls

As with 2008, activists, human rights groups, and diplomats have made calls to boycott the Olympic Games when they are hosted by China arguing a 2019 leak of the Xinjiang citizens and their mistreatment, the 2019–2020 Hong Kong protests, and the treatment of Uyghurs.[4]

Extreme Surveillance

Beijing artist dodges CCTV cameras for project created in defiance of China’s surveillance system - South Morning China Post

China's national surveillance system, humourlessly dubbed "Skynet," is a widespread network of cameras and mass surveillance equipment utilised by law enforcement for crime resolution, monitoring of dissidents, tracking of "unauthorised" protests, and maintaining public security. This surveillance infrastructure had authorities in Beijing in 2015 claiming 100% coverage in the city. According to a report in the state-run People's Daily newspaper, The system has aided the police in solving more than 1,500 criminal cases this year.

"Skynet" is employed without irony in this context and has raised apprehensions concerning privacy and civil liberties due to its extensive coverage. Chinese laws permits authorities to monitor the actions and whereabouts of individuals on a massive scale. The assertion that Skynet has contributed to the resolution of over 1,500 criminal cases aligns with the intended purposes of these surveillance systems, which are designed to support law enforcement in identifying suspects and thwarting criminal activities.[5]

Even more absurd, TechinAsia reported that the smog even made all the cameras useless.[6][7]
