The Young Leaders cadre selected by the Munich Security Conference

The Young Leader Program of the Munich Security Conference, is a forum for "future decision-makers to strengthen their international networks and inspire new thinking in foreign and security policy."[1] The program is a collaboration between the Körber Foundation and the Munich Security Conference. The program is particularly focused on drilling the leadership cadre in adherence to "multilateralism", which mostly means fealty NATO and similar organizations.

Alumni Sawsan Chebli on multilateralism:

Today, multilateralism seems to be an elite project. We need to change our language when we speak of multilateralism.[2]

Own words

Ali Aslan and Henry Kissinger at the New York Anniversary Meeting in 2019.[3]

Today, the Munich Young Leaders (MYL) Alumni Network has over 300 members from more than 70 different countries.[4] The vast network of the Munich Young Leaders – coming from a wide range of backgrounds including governments, national and regional parliaments, civil society, academia, think tanks, the media and the private sector – represent an invaluable repository, which has provided relevant impulses and inspiration to foreign and security policy debates on countless occasions.[5]

Activities

In addition to the annual gathering of the new Munich Young Leaders cohort in February, the Munich Security Conference and Körber-Stiftung invite all Munich Young Leaders to the Annual Meetings, which are organised in cooperation with a smaller alumni group from a host country. As of 2023, these gatherings have been held in Washington DC, Moscow, Berlin, Kyiv,Warsaw, Rabat, Madrid and New York. Throughout the year, Munich Young Leaders also participate in various events organized by the Munich Security Conference and Körber Foundation.[6]

The focus of the program can be deduced from the leaders they interact with. In 2009, the first batch of Munich Young Leaders met with Henry Kissinger.[5] In 2010, they "discussed the future of Euro-Atlantic security and global disarmament" with Carl Bildt and John McCain At the MSC, the 2011 class of MYL engaged with George Soros and Toomas Hendrik Ilves.[5]

The participants (listed on the right) are not sorted by year.
