Substack is an American online platform that provides publishing, payment, analytics, and design infrastructure to support subscription newsletters. It allows writers to send digital newsletters directly to subscribers. Founded in 2017, Substack is headquartered in San Francisco, California.

Marc Andreessen

In 2019, Marc Andreessen, through his company Andreessen Horowitz, announced that it would be "leading the Series A investment in Substack, and I will be joining the board.

In 2025, Substack was "pouring much of its effort into building a social network and warming up to the advertising business", it raised $100 million in funding from investors, including the Chernin Group, which backs sports, media and fan-focused businesses; BOND, a technology investment firm; Rich Paul, the founder of the agency Klutch Sports Group; Andreessen Horowitz; and the fashion executive Jens Grede, a co-founder of the shapewear brand Skims. The funding round valued Substack at $1.1 billion.

Manipulation of visibility

While Substack (as of 2025) has a less rigorous censorship than other social media platforms, from August 2024 it saw an large increase in the number of Substack authors who might be distinguished by their tendency to defend and support "official narratives," while writers outside this struggled to get reach.
