Daniel Emmanuel Adrien René Marie Ghislain baron Janssen is a Belgian businessman. He was a member of the Bilderberg Executive Committee, the Trilateral Commission the European Round Table of Industrialists and the Club of Rome.
Janssen is a member of the aristocratic Janssen family and a son of Baron Charles-Emmanuel Janssen (1907-1985), vice-chairman of the Generale Bank and chairman of the Union Chimique Belge (UCB), and lady Maya Boël (1909-1996), daughter of senator and industrialist baron Pol-Clovis Boël (1868-1941). In 1970 he married lady Thérèse Bracht (1948), daughter of Baron Charles-Victor Bracht (1915-1978), the kidnapped and then murdered Antwerp industrialist. They have three sons; his eldest son Nicolas Janssen married Countess Hélène d'Udekem d'Acoz (1979), sister of Mathilde, Queen of Belgium, in 2011.
Janssen graduated as a civil engineer in nuclear physics from the ULB. From 1959 to 1960 he was a member of the cabinet to European Commissioner Paul De Groote, after which he obtained his MBA from Harvard Business School. He then joined the Union Chimique Belge (UCB) where he ended his career as CEO from 1975 to 1984, before becoming CEO of Solvay. On June 4, 1998 he succeeded his cousin Yves Boël there as chairman of the board of directors.
He was also chairman of the Federation Chemical Industry of Belgium (FCN) from 1976 to 1979 and chairman of the Federation of Belgian Enterprises (FEB) from 1981 to 1984. He succeeded Frans Van den Bergh in this capacity, he was succeeded by André Leysen himself. Finally, from 1991 to 1992, he was president of the European Council of Industry Chimique (CEFIC).
He was also a director of Sofina and Générale de Banque and sat on various academic and philanthropic councils at ULB/VUB, the Hoover Foundation, the Solvay Brussels School, the Club de Rome, the Francqui foundation, the Belgian American Education Foundation.
Janssen is a Grand Officer in the Order of Leopold and Commander in the Order of the Crown and in the Order of Leopold II. In 1985 he obtained the personal title of baron and in 2005 this title was extended to all his descendants.
At some date since 2017, Wikipedia removed his English article, presumably for "not being notable" enough.
