US exceptionalism suggests that the US is a unique nation state, and can excuse itself from the general principles of cause and effect, international law etc. that apply to other nation states.

“So I would hope that people would take time to remember [about 9-11], but that they would also reflect on what an amazing country this is, and the responsibility that each and every one of us has to -- to make it even more so through our devotion to our ideals, to our devotion to our fellow Americans, and to our role in the world, which is unlike any other country in the history of the world.”
Condoleezza Rice (2002)  [1]
